【What to do in between meditation sessions – without sleeping at the wrong time】
So we know that sleep is needed. However, do not be attached to it, do not just let go. If you just let it go, then it is over! Well then, this speaks of the middle portion of the night.
【When you develop the body in that way, your body will be most serviceable for employment in both kinds of joyous perservance172 in the group of virtues, and this also will be helpful. (172 The two kinds of joyous perseverance are: the joyous perseverance of constant practice, and the joyous perseverance of reverent practice. The first is as it sounds, and the second is taking delight in that and making intense effort.) 】
There, this principle tells us. Because the four elements of the body are nourished during sleep, the body is being well-protected. Then you have great energy. At this time, you can then generate power to meditate/practice. When you meditate like this, the strength will be strong. Thus, it is "serviceable for employment." Because you have this power, therefore, there is great benefit. I have seen so many who have tried to practice meditation without normal sleeping. They did not sleep at night, hence they dozed off during the day and could not muster up energy to do anything. Ah! While doing anything…it is like, just standing there listlessly, still acceptable but inadequate. If you ask them to use a little more effort, like listening to the sutra, or try something, then they dozed off. So why would you do meditation without normal sleeping? Really! So this is a big error. This is something we should understand when we first begin.
