【The Meditation Session – What to do in between meditation sessions】- practice diligently without sleeping at the wrong time and how to act properly at the time of sleep
When we first begin and decide to learn "meditation without normal sleeping," this is an error. Once you have practiced to a certain level, you naturally will not need regular sleeping, only then can you do this practice. Strictly speaking, at what point do you not require normal sleeping? When you have achieved meditative stabilization [serenity]. Because after achieving the meditative stabilization state, your body and mind have begun to change. When your four elements have changed to concord with the objects [of meditation], then you do not need to sleep. But for us who are just beginners, if we are to force it, then we would have made this mistake, what mistake ? You are just learning the appearance of it, just like a bad pillow with a beautifully embroidered cover. [Translator note: this is a saying in Chinese where one mimics the looks of something without having the real essence, i.e. you can imitate the moves of a martial artist but you cannot really fight.] The inside, there isn't anything worthwhile to look at! This is demonstrated here. However, when the Zen Hall asks you to do this, there is a reason for that. In a real Zen Hall, there are special reasons for this.
