【Appropriate diet – Eating appropriate food which does not produce afflictions】
After you have understood the concept of (not) producing afflictions, you can then eat appropriately. On the other hand, if you just hold on to the idea of eating appropriately, then even if you did produce afflictions, there is still benefit. Because at least when you eat appropriately, you will not keep thinking about it after your meal. (Translator note: appropriate in the Chinese text refers to an appropriate/moderate amount) Maybe you will feel like the amount is a little less on the first day, but you will get used to it after three days of lesser food, thus you maintain your body and mind, and will not feel as heavy as before. At that time, it becomes easier for you to study and practice, let us think about whether is that right?
Therefore over here, this is why I often bring this up, it is just like this. Even though you know you will not be used to it in the beginning, after a few days you will get used to it. Take what we are doing here for example, in the beginning, everyone feels that the Luohan dish, ah-ya, so difficult [to accept], but after a few days of eating it, people now feel happy about it! (Translator note: Luohan dish means basically cooking all foods other than rice as one dish.) It is just like this! So take note of this! This is absolutely true. Let me tell you, you must not emphasize on the flavor, on that thing! So if you can accomplish "eating foods which does not produce afflictions" and you can eat "appropriate food", this is the best. However, for us normally, I know it for myself, we do not have this condition, what is our condition? Virtuous roots from our past lives which caused us to give up the path of the mundane world, that we are willing to be here, this is very precious now. So what should we do? We should accept this condition, we should know first in our hearts: this condition will help me. Even though I may not be used to it at first, feel like it is tortuous, but after some time of doing it, eh, you gradually become concordant.
