Preparation P5

【The Meditation Session】

【Preparation: (2) Obtain offerings without deceit, and arrange them beautifully. 】

Offering is the second one. You can therefore have all kinds of beautiful offerings. Why do we need to do this? For example, in the Hinayana vehicle, oh, doing this entails the destruction of the villages of ghost and deities ( referring to grasses and trees etc.) and this is not allowed. Even singing is not allowed. However, in the Mahayana vehicle, this is allowed if we are going to make offerings to the Buddha. These are all fine. This is for making beautiful offerings. It is number two. What is the third one?

【Preparation: (3) Sit up straight upon a comfortable seat in a suitable posture, your legs either in the full or half-lotus position, and then absorb yourself in the practices of going for refuge and developing the spirit of enlightenment. Asanga's Sravaka Levels (Sravaka-bhumi)152says to sit in the full lotus posture upon a throne, low seat, or the like in order to clear away obscurations such as longing for desirable objects, and to walk back and forth in order to clear your mind of the obscurations of sleepiness and lethargy. 】

The third one is when you begin to actually meditate, certain positions are required. So what are these positions? He tells us then if you are in a state of sleepiness and lethargy, you should walk back and forth. In usual times, you would mainly be in a sitting meditation position. To be rid of "obscurations such as longing for desirable objects," you should do sitting meditation. What would you do during a sitting meditation? He does not ask us for ascetic practice but instead to choose "a comfortable seat," meaning to sit as comfortably as possible. However, do not be attached to the comfort! The reason it should be comfortable is so that you will not keep thinking about it [the discomfort] in your mind. When you truly start a sitting meditation, there is one principle, that is you must focus entirely on your mind.
