【The Meditation Session】
Preparation : (3)
When I first began my learning with my teacher, he said to me, "Do not worry whether you can do the full lotus position or not. If you can sit in that posture, it is good. If you cannot, then stretch both legs out!" When I heard that, I thought, "Others have told me how to sit properly. How come he tells me this?" Eh, this is how I have truly obtained the benefits later. That was why during the time when I went to my teacher specifically for this kind of meditation. He even said, "Alright, you may lie down." Ah, marvelous! When you follow his instructions, you will get the benefits as long as you follow through with what he said. But if you are going to formally train, the best method is still the sitting position. This is absolutely true. There are other methods, but they are used to subdue us [i.e. our minds] under certain situations. We shall not go into it for the moment. This is just telling us the reasoning, that is, we should do what is suitable for us, whether it is prostrations or walking back-and-forth. Even lying down is alright too. Another section later will tell us how to practice while sleeping and eating. Of course these are "the practices in between the sessions." When we engage in actual meditation, the predominant activity is still sitting meditation.
