【Karma】- Can sins be transferred away?
【The actions you have done do not perish
Those who have done virtuous and nonvirtuous actions create pleasant and unpleasant effects. 】
Actions which you have done, they are sure to create [the effects]. Virtuous karma creates pleasant effects. Nonvirtuous karma surely creates unpleasant effects.
【As Udbhatasiddhasvamin's Praise of the Exalted One says:
The brahmins say that virtue and sin
May transfer to others—like giving and receiving a gift.
You [O Buddha] taught that what one has done does not perish
And that one does not meet with the effects of what one has not done. 】
"Brahmins" are the brahmins from India. The brahmins, who are non-Buddhists, what did they say? That virtues and sins are "like giving and receiving a gift." What is transfer? "May transfer to others - like giving and receiving a gift." These non-Buddhists think as such: Ah, the heaven, if you make some offerings [to the deities], then they will come and protect you! Like this. Therefore, with however much that you have offered to them, much like a merchandise, and with however much money you have obtained from them, you can use it to buy some things back. After you have sinned, as long as you do something for it, it would be okay, that sin will be offset! There is no such thing. Bhagavan tells us that once an action is done, it will not perish. If you have not done such an action, you will not experience it. They absolutely cannot be exchanged. It's of no use!
