第五,【五防护为何者,】

那么为什么要去防呢?防些什么呢?说:

【谓从杂染守护其意,令住善性,或无记性。】

那这个就是我们防的目标,这是宗旨。那平常我们这个意根一纵,对这个境的时候,一定是杂染的,一定是杂染的,不是贪、就是瞋、就是痴,就是这样。那么在这个时候,你经过了这个努力地防护的话,不让它杂染,不让它杂染,使它住在善性当中,最起码的善成无记性,无记性;无记性就是不是恶的,但是也不是善的。这个时候这是我们要防护的。

The 5th,【Restraining means 】

Then why should you restrain? What are you restraining from? It says.

【protecting the mind from being afflicted, and then setting it on something that is ethically neutral or virtuous.】

This is the goal of restraining, this is the mission. Normally when we let our mental sensory faculty go and it meets up with a sensory object, it will be in a contaminated state, in a contaminated state. It will be in the state of attachment, hostility or ignorance. Just like that. So then at this time, after you have made efforts at restraining to prevent it from being contaminated, prevent it from being contaminated, then you cause it to set on something virtuous, or the least of the virtuous state, i.e. ethically neutral, ethically neutral. Ethically neutral means it is not bad but neither is it virtuous. At this time, this is what we need to restrain from.
