【The Meditation Session】Actual session-How to sustain the meditation in general
We often make this one big mistake. We need to remove this.
【You might try to sustain your meditation by jumping to this and that object of meditation.】
This is how we are normally. When we say we want to meditate, we will just go meditate! Hence you will meditate on whatever you come across, "jumping to this and that object of meditation." That means whatever comes your way is whatever you will practice. In this case, this would be bad! It tells us why next.
【You may consider setting up according to your wish a variety of virtuous objects of meditation in no specific order. Though you may do this, you will not be able to take up your object of meditation with this method. Consequently, you will greatly hinder your mind's ability to be directed as you wish toward a virtuous object of meditation.】
In this case, we will hastily begin our practice. You want to quickly become successful.
But what is the result of that? It will not work! Therefore, for those who are in this type of situation, how do you achieve what you wish for? To achieve what you wish for, he specifically added these words, "specific order." This is because to achieve what you wish for, you must go about it in order. However, you simply practice whatever that you come across, you do not understand and really busy yourself [with that]. Hence, with regards to the content of meditation that you should know — the many things that have to be practiced according to the order — you are unable to grasp this "virtuous object of meditation" and get it wrong. Therefore, you will definitely not be able to make this happen — "you will not be able to take up your object of meditation".
