【The Meditation Session – What to do in between meditation sessions】- practice diligently without sleeping at the wrong time and how to act properly at the time of sleep – 4th kind of thought
Why is it that usually we do not concord [with the Dharma]? That is because our mindstream is in the midst of afflictions. Since you are in the midst of afflictions, then of course, whether you can generate [the right thoughts] or not, you are still following the afflictions. However, now, your mindstream is such that your body and mind have cultivated a desire for virtue. You are in this mindstream that aspires for virtue. Therefore, this kind of causally concordant consciousness in your mind continues to go along with virtue. Because of this, therefore even if you did not generate the right thoughts when you sleep, that kind of virtue still continues moving forward. Normally when we speak of seeking ethical discipline [or precepts], and wish to gain the substance of ethical discipline, that means this thing, so to speak. In the future, when we specifically talk about this, it will tell us clearly and plainly. Therefore, even if you have forgotten [the right thoughts], hey, it [i.e. the mind] is still in joyous perseverance. And moreover, it is cultivating a high level of joyous perseverance. May I ask then, if you are still cultivating a high level of joyous perseverance when you are forgetful, then needless to say when you do have the correct mindfulness, would you not be cultivating the Dharma? So then the problem is solved!
