除了这个 (阿鼻地狱和天上无色界当中众生) 以外的话，他一定在其他的有情共处当中。那个时候如果你不亲近善知识，你一定亲近的就是恶知识，这个概念我们要清楚。所以我们在没有谈这个恶知识对我们害处之前，我们要了解，没有中立可能的，绝无中立可能! 在这个地方如果要修学佛法的话，你要了解这点，非常重要，非常重要!
关于恶知识特别的行相等一下再讲，不过这个地方我们要了解，你不亲近善知识，然后亲近的时候，恶知识跟恶友的话，那怎么办呢？把你的功德渐渐地损减，一切的罪恶渐渐地增长，能够生起所有一切不是你欢喜的，一切的坏处都从这个地方来的。所以在任何情况之下，一定要远离。那么这个地方呢特别告诉我们，在任何情况之下，你一定要亲近善知识；而在任何情况之下，一定要远离恶知识。为什么呀？因为你亲近善知识；一切的功德增长，亲近恶知识呢，一切的过、恶生长。

【The faults of not relying on the Teacher】
【Moreover, if you rely on non-virtuous teachers and bad friends, your good qualities will slowly diminish and all of your faults will increase. Then everything that is unwanted will develop. Therefore, always avoid them. 】
Other than these circumstances [sentient beings from the Unrelenting Hell and formless realm in heaven ], one must be in the collective presence of other living beings. If you do not rely on an excellent Teacher, you would be relying on a non-virtuous teacher. This is a concept that we should be very clear with. So before we discuss the faults of relying on a non-virtuous teacher, we should know that it is not possible for there to be a neutral state. It’s definitely not possible to have a neutral state. If you want to learn the Buddha’s teachings, you must understand this point. It’s very important, very important.
In regards to the special characteristics of non-virtuous teachers, we will talk about this later. Here we should know that if you don’t rely on an excellent Teacher, and you rely on non-virtuous teachers and bad friends, what happens? Your good qualities will slowly diminish, and all of your faults will slowly increase. Everything unwanted will develop. Therefore, everything that is bad comes from this. So under all circumstances, you must avoid them. So here, it tells us, on all occasions, you must rely on an excellent Teacher. And on all occasions, you must avoid non-virtuous teacher. Why? Because when you rely on an excellent Teacher, all good qualities will increase. But when you are close to a non-virtuous teacher, all faults and sins will increase.
