Favorable & Adverse Conditions

  • In this life, no matter who we are—rich or poor, young or old—we will inevitably encounter both favorable and adverse conditions. Yet, it often feels like adversity comes far more frequently than ease.

We all hope for smoothness, for things to go well, perhaps even wishing that difficulties would never arise. But this is only a hope—rarely fulfilled in reality. Those who cling too tightly to everything going well are often the ones most easily disappointed. And when disappointment arises, where is happiness?

When adversity comes, how it ends depends on us. First, settle the mind—do not panic or become agitated. Then, sincerely pray:

    for compassion, to view others kindly;

for wisdom, to find the right way forward.

    As the ancients said:

“If something can still be done, why not be joyful?

If nothing can be done, what use is worry?”

If we find a way through and even transform adversity into ease, not only do others rejoice, but it also reflects the growth of our own compassion and wisdom.

If we fail, it is still an accumulation of life experience—a chance to understand ourselves more deeply. In this way, adversity becomes a teacher.

And when we learn to end adversity well, life itself becomes filled with more ease.
