【THE THREE TYPES OF PERSONS】- To complete the seven indispensable elements; Respect your guru, who is equal to the Buddha.
Faith, precepts, listening, shame and embarrassment, joyous perseverance, generosity, concentration and wisdom, are the *seven indispensable elements. So if we can perfect this practice, then we can always uphold the teaching without regressing in cyclic existence and downfall [to the miserable realms].
[*The seven indispensable elements of Buddhist practice are compared to treasures.]
“Respect your guru, who is equal to the Buddha,” this is the aspect of self-preparation. For our reliance, the most important foundation for cultivation is our own teacher, the teacher we rely on. We should respect this teacher like a Buddha, to study various instructions taught by him and practice them accordingly. This is the most important step for us to actually enter the Mahayana practice and advance accordingly.
