【Intent of Liberation】 - I just need to recite the Buddha’s name
Now, there is a type of person who is ambitious and always want to acquire the higher teachings. There is another type of person who is exactly the opposite, “Aiya, I can’t do this, I can’t do it!” and they seem to be paralyzed and are unable to climb out of their situation. Some say, “I just need to recite the Buddha’s name.” Indeed, it is good to recite the Buddha’s name. If you can truly recite the Buddha’s name, then it is very good! As a result, due to his frail mentality, he only says, “I just need to recite the Buddha’s name.” But in his actual practice, did he recite the Buddha’s name? He did not do it! He fell into laxity and lethargy. His whole life was wasted. Therefore, excess is just as bad as deficiency! Most of us now have this type of problem. This is the general phenomena of the practitioners. If you speak of the subtle aspect of this, that is how our mental states are as well. When our minds are strong and forceful, we would all of a sudden go overboard and then the next moment, all of a sudden crash it. Ah! Then we cannot lift our spirits up again. That is how we are.
