【Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels】- Staying close to Buddha versus staying close to the “self”
We tell ourselves often that we wish to learn from Buddha, we should be close to Buddha, and serve Buddha. How do we become close to Dharma? How do we serve the Buddha? It is to take your mind, and think of him whole-heartedly, think of him whole- heartedly.
Who do we think of now? If we are not asked to examine ourselves, we are still clueless and do not realize it. Once we examine ourselves carefully, then it is hard to say [that you truly think of Buddha]. Based on what I see, in my own experience, we normally rely on, rely on the “self.” We are always serving the “self.” Oh-yo! My head hurts, hurry! I need to find some medicine. Ah, maybe it could be a lack of nutrition or because I did not sleep that well last night… All day long, you are busy with this, just like that. It is not saying that you should neglect it (the body). You do need it. However, what is the purpose of having it? We need it for our practice. We need to recognize this point. Because you need to use it for your practice, therefore you would minimally need to provide it with nourishment. That is why Buddha told us this repeatedly, you do need this vehicle. Eh, you do need to polish it. Note that only the wax used for polishing is required. Pay attention here! Do not be deceived by the vehicle.
