法的特质写在黑板上面，大家看一下 ——清净、寂静。如果我们笼统地说，清净跟寂静可以互通，如果严格一点说，清净是什么？就是在我们闻思慧当中，我们如理地了解，然后呢认真去做，那个时候还是我见还在，没有断，但是你随顺于法这样去做的，那个是清净。寂静呢？破掉了！那个时候寂静，这法的特质是这个。
说现在懂了，懂得什么法？要懂这个，才是真的懂法。假定说，这个文字语言算一部分也算懂了的话，那这个录音带，这个留声机比我们懂得很多耶，书本比我们懂得更多耶！这个我们要懂得。不是说我听了一点、看了一点，能说能道，这个叫懂得法。不是啊！这是懂得法必定需要的经过的几个步骤，这是……它真正的重点，就是你听懂了以后，然后呢修学、净化你的杂染，然后能够静息你的染污、热恼，这个是法的特质。

【The faults of not relying on the teacher】
What are the characteristics of the teaching? At this point, in fact, in many instances, this is what you must ascertain.
The characteristics of the teaching are written on the board here. Everyone can take a look – clarity and serenity. Generally speaking, these terms are interchangeable. But if we want to specifically define these terms, what is clarity? This happens when we try to obtain the wisdoms of study and reflection, we understand the teaching properly and diligently practice it. At that time, the view of the self remains, it has not been eliminated. But if you can follow the teachings and practice as such, that counts as clarity. What is serenity? That is when you have eliminated [the view of the self]! That's when you have obtained serenity. These are the characteristics of the teaching.
When you say you understand it now, what kind of teachings do you understand? You should understand this before you have a real understanding of the teachings. If you consider knowing the words and language to mean that you understand, then this tape or this tape recorder know a lot more than us. Books would know even more than us! This is what we should understand. Just because we hear or read a little of the teachings, we are able to discuss it fluently, we think we understand the teachings. No! These are only the necessary steps required to understand the teachings. The most important point is that after you hear the teachings, you train to purify your defilements, to silence your defilements and afflictions. These are the characteristics of the teachings.
