Relying on The Excellent Teacher】未依过患者 The faults of not relying on the teacher

【e. The faults of not relying on the teacher】

【The Tantra Bestowing the Initiation of Vajrapani states: 】
This scripture says, the Tantra says,

【"Bhagavan, what sort of fruition is there for those who reproach their masters?"】
This is a dialogue between Buddha and Vajrapani. Vajrapani is also Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva. In the practice of the Tantra (or secret school), he is the great master of the Tantra. The text says, "Buddha! If someone reproaches his masters, [what happens]?" We should know that there are a few kinds of masters/teachers, five in general: one who has charge of novices (i.e the ordination teacher, who performs ordination ceremonies), a teacher of deportment and demeanor at the time of adopting the vows, master of ceremonies (who recites the instruction in ritual to novices), master of the scriptures (who teaches scriptures) and master of the Sangha community, all these. But earlier text told us that this extends to the point of even listening to a verse of four lines. Actually after you truly understand this, everyone is our our master. Everyone helps you to accomplish your goal to become a Buddha! Devadetta was one of the greatest masters of the Buddha. We always hope that beginning with the Buddha, our excellent teachers, and then step by step, eventually, anyone can be our master. That's when we will achieve Buddhahood.
