The benefits of relying on the teacher

The Array of Stalks Sutra says: .. Bodhisattavas whom teachers take into consideration do not contradict the bodhisattva training.

It's much like our own experiences.  People would frequently say, "Ah!  Please let me know if I have done something wrong."  Indeed there are many people with good intentions like this.  I used to do that myself.  I kept asking as well, "Ah!  Teacher, so and so Dharma Master, please tell me."  But they never told me anything.  Later, I inadvertently discovered that it was not because they didn't want to tell me.  The thing is, they will never say, "Eh, so and so!  Didn't you want me to tell you your mistakes?  Let me tell you.  You can sit down and I will tell you."  They won't do that.  But when you actually made a mistake, he will come and tell you.

However, you would react with all kinds of excuses and say, "Eh!  I didn’t do anything wrong! I’m right on this!"  Ah!  Upon hearing this, alright, he has seen it very clearly.  He was going to tell you the truth but only got your excuses [as a response].  So he has nothing more to say the next time except, "You are right!  You are right!"  So we heard this story from Chinese history the last time , "A thousand gold pieces for bones."  Why did we tell the story?  Even if someone is wrong in what he is trying to tell you, you should still listen with utmost respect.  He would then feel you are teachable and he will tell you things.  There are many things that we cannot see.  There are many things that we cannot see, many that we cannot see.  This is particularly true with Dharma practice.  If you don’t compare, you will absolutely not be able to see.  This is my experience.
