Little Hands, Big Hearts: Children Volunteering During Vesak Day

Vesak Day is a time to remember the Buddha's teachings and to put them into practice through kindness, generosity, and compassion. While many children look forward to participating in the celebrations, this year, on 30 and 31 May, a special group of young volunteers chose to experience Vesak in a different way—by volunteering at the Children's Booth.

From welcoming families with bright smiles to guiding younger children through activities, our young volunteers took on their responsibilities with enthusiasm and sincerity. Whether they were helping to prepare materials, explaining instructions on how to bathe the Buddha, distributing gifts, keeping the area tidy, or simply offering encouragement to shy participants, every small act of service reflected a caring heart.

For many of them, it was their first experience volunteering at such a large event. They quickly discovered that volunteering is not always easy. It required patience when the booth became busy, responsibility in completing assigned tasks, and teamwork to support one another throughout the day. Despite the challenges, they persevered with joyful hearts, learning that true happiness often comes from helping others.

More importantly, volunteering became an opportunity to practise the Buddha's teachings beyond the classroom. Through every interaction, the children learnt to think of others before themselves, to communicate kindly, and to offer help without expecting anything in return. These simple moments became valuable lessons in cultivating compassion, generosity, patience, and mindfulness.

Behind every successful activity was also the guidance of dedicated teacher volunteers who patiently mentored the children, giving them opportunities to take ownership, make decisions, and grow in confidence. It was heartwarming to witness the older children naturally caring for the younger ones, creating an environment filled with encouragement and mutual support.

As the day came to an end, many of the young volunteers shared that although they were physically tired, they felt a deep sense of joy and fulfillment. Seeing the smiles of the children they had served reminded them that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone's day.

At Zest Universe, we believe that every act of service is a seed of goodness. By giving children opportunities to volunteer from a young age, we hope to nurture not only capable individuals but also compassionate hearts that will continue to benefit others in the future.

Thank you to every young volunteer who dedicated their time and energy during Vesak Day. Your willingness to serve has shown that no act of kindness is ever too small. May these wholesome seeds continue to grow, inspiring many more acts of compassion in the years to come.

Together, let us continue walking the path of wisdom and compassion—one act of kindness at a time.
