Dear Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva…

Have you ever prayed for a divine lot? A friend of BW Monastery shares her experience.

My story happened some years ago when the Monastery was newly opened.

One day, I was wandering around the Grand Shrine Hall after attending an event there. Venerable Zu Dao spotted me and came over for a chat. Then, she handed me a book.

Venerable Zu Dao told me that this is the first draft of the book of Guan Yin Divine Lot Interpretations that the Monastery intended to reprint. It sounded interesting, so I flipped through the book eagerly. Seeing my excitement, Venerable Zu Dao suggested that I should pray to the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva for a lot.

Honestly, I had never prayed for a lot before that day. I remember that when I was young, my ahma would bring me to this famous temple in Singapore to pray for a lot. However, I would always tell her there was nothing I wanted to ask about.

That day was different. It would be the first lot I would be praying for in the Monastery! I took the Venerable’s suggestion and thought very hard about what I should ask.

I thought back to the very purpose that I come to BW Monastery for:
To become someone like the Buddha one day!

With that in mind, I expressed my wish to attain Buddhahood as soon as possible to the Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva.

The compassionate Bodhisattva responded to my prayers with a very auspicious lot!

Don’t ask me what it was though — I don't remember which lot number I got! But what I can share is this:

That day firmed my belief that the Triple Gem are always there for us and ever ready to answer our questions. After this encounter, I found myself more motivated in my practice and developed the habit of taking refuge and supplicating sincerely to the Triple Gem often.
