Topic: The greater importance of lineage scriptures in a tumultuous era

【Therefore, having seen that they lack the path pleasing to the wise,
The supreme complete instructions, the key points of the teaching,
I was inspired to explain

Introduction of the Four Interwoven Annotations Vol. 1 P76-L6 ~ P77-L5
In the past, there were some teachers discussing some issues, asking: “Nowadays, people have difficulty staying focused; it is even more difficult for them to concentrate for long hours. People are just so used to browsing fragments of information, such as browsing their phones, watching audio-visual materials, etc. When it comes to printed books, it seems very difficult for them to focus already, let alone those grand, voluminous works. What is the solution?” At that time, my opinion was still the scriptures with lineage. Precisely because this is an era surrounded by audio-visuals, overly clamorous and noisy, all the more we need a power to ground us down. Hence, accentuating the importance of having scriptures and preserving the lineages. [00:51]
If everyone is used to discussing an issue not at depth, over time, many things will also not be explored in-depth. For instance, trust will also not be in-depth, our observation towards our mind will also not be in-depth. When there are interpersonal conflicts, we will also not go in-depth to resolve the conflicts and build up a deeper trust again. Hence, when one issue arises, a portion of the trust will be lost, being discounted. Without a timely remediation, in the end, after all the accumulated points of trust are depleted, people will no longer be able to build trust. Trust is built up in our hearts through challenges, failures, and hardships again and again. Will you take this trust as the faith we have in others? Sometimes it is also the confidence we have in our own capability to do kind deeds. [01:42]
Therefore, precisely because of the era we are in now, preserving the lineage has an even more extraordinary significance. As Rinpoche mentioned earlier [in #165], “the four intentions for composing commentaries” are the essential criteria for a sutra to be qualified as immaculate. The requirement is very clear - what exactly is the gist . It is not something that we just look at it happily, and happily passing this moment that is it. It has a continuous benefit regardless of now or in the ultimate future. It is not merely being happy at this moment, it must have the correct benefit for now and for the future – helping our mind to stop the non-virtues and practise virtues, this is how we can alleviate suffering and achieve happiness. Hence, the scriptures lead our hearts walking towards happiness, walking towards perfection, walking towards an ultimate goal where we steer further and further from suffering. It is very direct, very direct. There are no contradicting causes, no semblance causes in it, just facing the issue directly and resolving the problem directly. [02:48]
Hence, the existence of the scriptures has even more meaning in this era. It is not that many people are impetuous, so it seems like no one is studying the scriptures. No one is studying but we have so many students all studying the scriptures! Because of this era, all the more we need to analyze deeply what is suffering, what is the cause of suffering, how to remove the cause of suffering, what is the path to alleviating suffering and attaining happiness. All the more we need clear, accurate in-depth analysis towards our mind, towards a lot of phenomena happening now and find the solution. The solution is to annihilate afflictions in our mind, to annihilate ignorance in our minds. Through the method of transforming our mind, we can achieve the inner joy and peace, and even ever-lasting happiness. [03:32]
Thus, we are able to study this treatise in this era, especially with Master's explanation, Rinpoche's impartation of the Four Interwoven Annotations, we are studying together now; I honestly feel…. I dare not say “I was inspired to explain” [as Lama Tsong-kha-pa], but when it is time to study Global Lamrim together, I am really, really exhilarated! Regardless of whether we are face-to-face, regardless where you are listening; I always feel that we are sitting together in a big classroom learning Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, learning Introduction of the Four Interwoven Annotations, this is truly something of great merits! Let our minds detach from those tumultuous, mundane daily life, from those trivial, afflictive unhappiness, and put the effort into studying the scriptures. Let us listen to Buddha’s teaching and examine our mind very clearly and with deep impression. and adjust our own pace. And then ponder: our most exalted goal in life is to achieve the ultimate enlightenment; not only for the sake of my own happiness that I am striving so hard, but for the sake of all living beings to be able to achieve the most encompassing happiness, I strive hard with all might. If we can think in this way, our [perspective] on life will become broader and we will be encouraged; we will not be trapped by the trivial daily matters, or even an unpleasant look from others, or words improperly phrased, and our heart is hung up on it. You can get over it very easily. The reason we can get it over easily is because we can listen to Lamrim, we can listen to Buddha’s teaching, we can listen to such interesting explanation of the mind – explaining how many living beings are suffering internally, explaining how interesting Buddhas and Bodhisattvas’ minds are. We are able to directly tackle the root problem in life, resolving it thoroughly. We will not just scratch the surface of the matter; the sheer attention we pay to the superficial level would already make us exhausted and agitated, yet the situation does not improve. Therefore, being able to learn this treatise in this era, it is really Master’s profound kindness and everyone’s virtuous roots. Thus, everyone must definitely persevere in the learning and study well! I sincerely rejoice everyone! [05:35]

以前有一些老师来讨论问题的时候，问说：“现在的人很难专注，长时间的专注都很难做到，就习惯看那些片断的，比如说滑手机，或者影音、影像这样一些东西。对于纸本的书好像已经很难做到专注，何况是鸿篇巨著，那么到底出路是什么？”那时候我的观点依然是传承经典，正因为是在这样一个被影像和声音完全包围的时代，过分地喧杂，更需要沉淀下去的力量，所以更加显示了经典存在、传承的重要性。 [00:51]
大家如果常常习惯于对一个问题探讨得不深入的话，久了之后很多东西都会随之不深入的。比如信任也不会深入，对内心的观察也不会深入，当人和人之间彼此有了矛盾，也不深入地去化解矛盾，再建立出更深的信任。所以出现一次问题之后，信任就会缺失一块，就被打折一下，并没有做一个及时的修整，到最后把信任的积累分数全部花光了之后，人们就无法建立信任了。信任是要在挫折、失败和一次次的磨难中，在内心中坚强地建立出来的。你说信任是对其他人的信任吗？有的时候也是对自己能够行善的一个信心。 [01:42]
所以，正因为是在现在这个时代，经典的传承更具有非凡的意义。看刚才仁波切讲的：“所为四法”是一个清净论典它之所以称为清净的必要条件，它的要求是非常清楚的——所诠到底是什么。不是一个东西看着很高兴，然后很高兴地度过此时就可以了；它对现在还有究竟的未来，它都有一个一向连贯的利益。不是仅仅现在欢乐地度过此时就可以了，一定要对现在和未来有正确的饶益——我们的心续能够断恶修善，这样才能够离苦得乐。所以它引导我们的内心走向幸福、走向圆满、走向会越来越离开痛苦这样一个究竟的目标，是非常直接的、非常直接的；没有什么相违的因、没有什么相似的因在里边，就是直接面对、直接解决问题。 [02:48]
所以论典在这个时代更有它存在的意义，并不是很多都浮躁了，所以论典好像没人学。没人学，我们这么多同学都在学嘛！正因为是这样一个时代，我们更需要这种深刻剖析什么是苦、什么是苦因、如何断除苦因、什么是离苦得乐之道；我们更需要清晰准确地对内心做深刻地剖析，对很多现存的现象进行深刻地分析，然后去找到解决之道。解决之道就是在心上要灭除烦恼、在心上要灭除无明，透过转心的方式达成内心的愉悦和安宁，甚至永远的快乐。 [03:32]
所以我们在这样的时代能够听到这样的一本论，而且是师父讲，然后仁波切讲《四家合注》，我们现在在一起学，我实在是觉得——不敢说我心全然遍勇喜，但是每次到学全广的时间我真的是非常、非常地高兴！不管我们能不能面对面，不管你在什么地方听，我都觉得我们坐在一个大课堂里一起学习《菩提道次第广论》、学习《四家合注入门》，这真是一件非常有福报的事情！让我们的心从喧喧嚷嚷、平常的生活中，从一些琐碎的、烦烦恼恼的不愉快，卡卡的很多事情中抽身，把我们的心力抽出来在这个论典上努力，让我们在这一刻非常清晰深刻地倾听佛语、凝视内心，再调整自己的步伐。然后想一想，我们最高远的目标是为了成就无上正等菩提，不仅仅是为了自我的安乐做很多努力，而是为了所有的有情都能够趣入最圆满的快乐，我做很多努力。 [04:38]
想一想的话，生命就会感到很辽阔、很振奋，不会被每天发生那些小事卡住，甚至别人的一个不愉快的脸色、一句说错的话，心里一直过不去，你就很容易穿越。很容易穿越的原因，就是因为我们能听到《广论》、能够听到佛语、能够听到这么精彩地解释内心——解释很多有情的内心是怎么痛苦的、解释佛菩萨的内心是多么地精彩，我们能够直面生命最根本的问题，做最根本的解决。不会浮在事情的表面上，光是注意那些表面的事情就让自己焦头烂额，事情却没有改善。所以在这样的时代能够学到这样的论，实在是师父的深恩、诸位的善根，所以大家一定要坚持学下去、好好学下去！非常地随喜大家！ [05:35]
