Great! Let’s listen to the next paragraph together.
[2B 22:27 ~ 23:19]
He beseeched virtuous teachers in his teens and passed away in his seventies; you can imagine what a high level he had achieved. But he never claimed, at least not in his biography; he did not specifically indicate “what achievement I have attained on the path;” this was not mentioned. Nevertheless, at least what is mentioned here is that this great teacher [Master Atisha] upheld Buddha’s encompassing teaching. This was why all Buddhism schools in India highly venerated him. For those who chant Buddha’s name, by following his teaching, they would have achievement. For those meditators, by applying his teaching, they would have attainment too. Whether you practice Zen, Pure Land, precepts, Tantra, or tenet teachings, you will accomplish your objective due to his encompassing teaching. Therefore, this passage indicates the profound significance of this lineage. [00′50″]
Over this short paragraph, Master said that Master Atisha upheld the encompassing lineages of Buddha’s teachings and what achievement had he reached back then in India? All schools and sects venerated him as the Guru. He carried on his waist the keys to 108 major monasteries, which signified that all monasteries honoured him as the crown jewel. Whatever school of thoughts people applied, they all followed the guidance of Master Atisha to conduct their spiritual training. Think about it, how difficult it was to invite such an eminent master to Tibet, and such difficulty was more than the issue of inviting India’s national treasure! [01′30″]
Master Atisha left the place where he had reached the pinnacle of honour and went to Tibet, where he didn’t know the language. If you visit Nie-tang monastery where Master Atisha once resided, you would notice that it is a low-rise building, a really small monastery. Back then, for the sake of upholding the entire teaching, he sacrificed 20 years of his lifespan just to preserve the lineage of the stages of the path. Hence we should appreciate the profound kindness of Master Atisha wholeheartedly! [01′59″]
In regard to what we are learning now, if it wasn’t for the sacrifice made by the masters of the past, if it wasn’t for their promulgating of the Dharma to benefit all sentient beings, how could it be possible for us to study and hear such [encompassing and pure] lineage? So the “bow” in the “I bow to Dipamkara [Atisha], bearer of the treasury of instructions” should be the most profound, sincere salute from the depths of our hearts. We should always be grateful, and reverent till the endless future! If it wasn’t for such an excellent master of the lineage, even though we are inspired to be liberated from cyclic existence, to uphold Mahayana aspiration, even to accomplish the ultimate enlightened stage as Buddha, how would we be able to find the path? How to discover the sequential steps? If it wasn’t for these great predecessors who manifested themselves and gave us all kinds of guidance, we truly had no way of knowing how to apply our spiritual practice; thus “I bow to Dipamkara [Atisha], bearer of the treasury of instructions”! [03′04″]
Now everyone please turn to page 61, the Chinese text of the Introduction to the Four Interwoven Annotations. Let’s go over the blue, red and black prints in the last paragraph; it says:
Next, let’s read page 62 in the Introduction of the Four Interwoven Annotations! It says, “Next is a praise to the unequalled honourable one who is respected by celestial beings for composing the treatise of this path;” here “composing the treatise of this path” refers to the author who composed the stages of the path; the author who also composed the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment is Master Atisha. “The unequalled honourable one respected by celestial beings” is the highest veneration. This verse is praise to Master Atisha. [04′24″]
Another question follows, “What is ‘the path’?” Rinpoche replied, “’The path’ refers to the stages of the path to enlightenment.” Who was the author of this teaching? The author is Master Atisha.” [04′34″]
Let’s recap [what we have discussed]: [promulgating the lineage] with precise diction, encompassing meanings, and what else? As well as with blessings! Take heed! Diction, meanings, and blessings are jointly together without any gap and malice. Moreover, the lineage accords with both the gateways of Profound View and Extensive Deeds, and the lineage is the orderly stages of the path to enlightenment. Now we are listening to such lineage and what a great honour this is! [07′14″]
What is mentioned above is the praise for how pure and sublime the lineage is. To whom was such beautiful, pure and powerful lineage passed down to? It was passed down to Master Atisha and he shouldered them all as the upholder of this stockpile of treasure. Thus, we bow to eminent Master Atisha! [08′29″]
In the end, someone asked Rinpoche again, “Exactly how many lineages were passed down?” While Rinpoche was imparting the teaching, he emphasized, “There are three lineages! Because the Great Deeds lineage was presented indirectly; it is the lineage of the most honourable protectors, Manjusri Bodhisattva and Santideva Bodhisattva, and is named as the Great Deeds lineage. This is not expressed explicitly, but other scriptures did mention that the three lineages converged into one. Hence, Master Atisha is the keeper of all of the three lineages.” The convergence of the three lineages is in a way like the convergence of all the rivers and streams into the ocean. Likewise, all teachings of the three lineages converge into the mental stream of Master Atisha. Hence we offer our utmost profound veneration to such a master of the lineage! [09′11″]
