Relying on The Excellent Teacher】未依过患者 The faults of not relying on the teacher P21

【The faults of not relying on the teacher】
【Also, the Verses about Friends says: The wise should not befriend
Those who are without faith or who are stingy, Those who lie, or who speak divisively;
They should not accompany sinful persons. 】
This verse points out the characteristics of nonvirtuous teachers and bad friends. The first line encompasses everything, "without faith." This means not to have faith. In regards to faith, everyone should know that this does not just mean, "I believe in Buddha." No, it is not just a statement like that. It doesn't count when you just say it like that. The character of faith is "the nature of purifying the mind." So how can we determine whether your faith has the nature of purifying the mind? That is why we must have intelligence. The nature of faith is such that it helps you to purify and eliminate afflictions. If you understand this correctly, then whenever a person speaks, you would know how he is. In general, we would often converse about how people are right or wrong. As soon as someone opens his mouth, you would know, "Sorry, he is being judgmental of others. His mind is not pure; he is in the middle of afflictions and defilements." You would immediately stay away from him.
