【《本生论》亦云：「悉不应远诸善士，以调伏理修善行，由近彼故其德尘，虽不故染自然薰。」】
「以调伏理修善行」。什么叫调伏理啊？平常我们说——戒，戒。你可以说广义地来说，所有的佛法；狭义的来说是戒，而这个广义的调伏是从戒开始的。我们为什么要修行啊？因为是烦恼杂染之行，都是恶的，随顺着我们自己，我想这个样、我欢喜那样、我要那样，这样才配我胃口。对不起，这个都是杂染、染污之法。现在你有正确的了解了，起心动念觉得:哎呀，不对呀！这个又随顺着我见，这个随顺着说我惑，或者思烦恼，或者见烦恼——见烦恼是我的见解如此，思烦恼是贪瞋痴慢等等。正确地认识，然后呢把它去克服，这个叫调伏，这个就是戒，这就是戒，戒的真正行相是这个！那么你怎么知道呢？你怎么知道这个? 平常我们说我们当然理所当然的，你怎么知道那个我不对呢？这个没有善知识的引导是绝无可能！

【The benefits of relying on the teacher】
【Also, the Garland of Birth Stories states:
Any intelligent person should not be distant from excellent beings and should rely on these virtuous beings in a disciplined manner. Once you are close to them, particles of their good qualities will stick to you automatically. 】
What is “a disciplined manner”? We would in general say – ethical discipline, ethical discipline. To use a broad definition of this, it means all of Buddha’s teachings. To use a strict definition of this, it means ethical discipline. The disciplining as implied in the broad definition begins with ethical discipline. Why do we practice the Dharma? That is because our actions/behaviour are defiled. They are all non-virtuous. They all go along with our own preferences; I think it's this way, I like it that way, and I want it that way because that suits my taste. I am sorry, these are all defiled and tainted. Now that you have the correct understanding, when a thought rises, you would think, "Ah, this is wrong! This is going along with my view. This is going along with my afflictions, either afflictions of the emotions or afflictions of the view – afflictions of the view are my views and afflictions of the emotions are attachment, hostility, ignorance, pride and so on. When you have a correct recognition and understanding, and overcome it, this is called disciplining. This is exactly ethical discipline, exactly ethical discipline. The true characteristic of ethical discipline isthis! But how did you come to know this? How did you come to know this? We would usually think that we are of course within reasons, so how would you know that‘I’ is wrong? You will absolutely not know without the guidance of a teacher!
