【未依过患者】

【如《现在诸佛现证三摩地经》云：「若彼于师住嫌恨心，或坚恶心，或恚恼心，能得功德，无有是处。】
经上面告诉我们，我们对这个师长「住嫌恨心」，嫌恨心─你讨厌他，因为讨厌就嗔恨心，就这个。然后呢？「坚恶心」，这个恶心还老在那个地方，这个坚恶心。这个软的起一念都不可以，你还把那个心老在这个地方，啊！那是更可怕。前面告诉我们，你起一念的承事，就有这样的功德；你起一念的恶心，就这样长的劫数，你就住在恶道当中。所以说嫌恨心不可以，坚恶心更不可以，你只要一念「恚、恼」，就是这样，恚是嗔，恼是恼乱，而在这种情况之下，能得功德无有是处，经上说得明明白白。你说想得到功德，绝无可能，绝没有！

【The faults of not relying on the teacher】

【If the students remain resentful, intractable, or hostile toward the Guru, they have no way to obtain good qualities.】

The sutra tells us, if we are "resentful" of the teacher; resentful - you dislike him. Because you dislike him, you develop hostility. This is it. Then after that? You are "intractable", this non-virtuous mindset lingers on. This is to be intractable. You should not even have one thought that is resentful, yet you persist on being intractable. Ah! That is even more horrendous. The previous section tells us if you generate one thought of veneration towards your teacher, you will gain great merits. But if you generate one non-virtuous thought, you will fall into the miserable realms for long eons of time. Therefore, you shouldn’t be resentful, and all the more you should not be intractable. So then even one thought of "hostility and disturbance," just these - hostility is to be antagonistic and disturbance is to disturb the teacher. In this case, one will have no way to obtain good qualities. This is said very clearly in the scriptures. If you wish to obtain good qualities, it will be absolutely impossible.
