When learning the teachings, how do we define as truly understanding it?

WHEN LEARNING THE TEACHINGS, HOW DO WE DEFINE AS TRULY UNDERSTANDING IT?

Exhaustively listening to the teachings, begins with differentiating, understanding, through solid learning of the teachings, listening, contemplating and practising can we define the demarcation. 
Otherwise, everything will be muddled together without any means to differentiate.
