Master’s discourse FengShanSi Version Vol 1 P54-LL3 ~ P56-L4

Greetings to all! It’s time for our Lamrim discussion again! As usual, everyone please take a moment to examine your current state of mind: are you properly prepared for listening to the teaching, especially in Mahayana aspiration? I always hope that we would all set our Mahayana aspiration earnestly prior to each discussion. Because this aspiration practice requires continuous drill until it becomes our habit. That is, whatever task we undertake, we would instantaneously bear this aspiration of achieving ultimate enlightenment in mind, rather than for the sake of living this life more comfortably, or for the sake of fame, or benefits, or for one’s own liberation from cyclic existence. We have to eliminate such intention; we would learn the Buddha Dharma with a total pure motivation – for the sake of benefiting the immeasurable motherly beings, we must seek the effect/commensurate stage of omniscience. To achieve the state of omniscience, we need to follow the paths of the three types of persons, and learn in the order of listening, contemplation, and meditation/cultivation. Hence, listening to the sublime teaching is the essential prerequisite for us to attain omniscience. So now everyone, please brace yourself and listen attentively. [01:13]

Today I’d like you all to listen to Master's newer version of Lamrim commentary on the section of “Here the teaching that I will explain…contain[s] the key points of all of the Conqueror’s scriptures”, for this short section is the essentials of the entire Lamrim text.  Master already covered it in his original Lamrim commentary. Now let’s listen again from what perspective  Master explicated it in his newer version of Lamrim commentary. Please don’t be distracted, or feel lethargic while listening! [01:40]

[Newer version 02 47:41 ~ 50:38]

So this is the Introduction in the beginning of Lamrim, which is mainly about paying homage. [Je Rinpoche] continued to explain the gist of the Lamrim text. Before the main text, there is a statement; let me read it for you. [02:03]

Here the teaching that I will explain is how fortunate beings are led to buddhahood by way of the stages of the path to enlightenment that (1) contain the key points of all of the Conqueror's scriptures, (2) are the pathways forged by two great trailblazers, Nagarjuna and Asanga, (3) are the system for supreme beings progressing to the state of omniscience, and (4) fully comprise all the stages practiced by the three types of persons. [02:31]

“Here the teaching” refers to Lamrim text; the explication in this Treatise fully contains…. The word “contain” means every teaching from all Buddhas, not just our Sakyamuni Buddha, but also all Buddhas in ten directions and three lifetimes [past, present and future]; all are included without omission. Thus, it is often said, “All Buddhas’ paths are the same”, meaning to reach Buddhahood, the essence obtained by all Buddhas in ten directions and three lifetimes is the same, without any omission. However, what this Treatise explicates is not to cover everything Buddha taught but to include all the essential points that Buddha intended to tell us. This is the first aspect in regard to the teaching of all Buddhas. Then, in order for the teaching to pass down, a lineage is required. Thus, “all inclusive” indicates that the Buddha’s teaching consists of two parts: one is the Profound View, and the other is Extensive Deeds, both of which are two Mahayana schools. Bodhisattva Nagarjuna and Bodhisattva Asanga led these two schools respectively. The two trailblazers are like the road we have nowadays; each one is like a trail, and there are two trails. What are the trails for? By following the trails, one is able to advance on “the system for supreme beings progressing to the state of omniscience” – Buddhahood. The phrase “supreme beings” means those excellent practitioners who can reach Buddha Realm. In terms of Confucianism, they are the people of noble integrity, not any mediocre person of vile character! This is how it works. So all the means and guidelines are provided and set out in the Treatise. Now the methods are divided into three steps, which are known as the three approaches for “three types of persons”, namely the beginner, the middle, and the advanced. In the Treatise, they are known as the practitioners of small capacity, medium capacity, and great capacity. All the practices that we should apply are divided into these stages, as in “fully comprise all the stages”; the Treatise contains every step of practice that a practitioner needs to follow without any omission. [04:38]

Master explained this passage in the newer version of Lamrim commentary. You should all have the [Chinese] printed copy? In the text, “Here the teaching” refers to Lamrim. And what does “contain” refers to? It is the quintessence of all the key points that Buddha taught, which includes all the teachings from all Buddhas. Master said that not just our Sakyamuni Buddha, but all Buddhas in the ten directions and three lifetimes are all included; there is no exception, as in a [well-known saying], “All Buddhas’ paths are the same”, the essence obtained by all Buddhas in the ten directions and three lifetimes is the same, without any omission. And for the key points, Master explained, “to include all the essential points that Buddha intended to tell us. This is the first aspect”, as in the verse, “Here the teaching … contain[s] the key points of all of the Conqueror's scriptures”. [05:34]

At this point, everyone please think about this: for a treatise as voluminous as Lamrim, do we truly believe that it contains “the key points of all of the Conqueror's scriptures”? Why did Je Rinpoche say that it includes all the essential points from all Buddhas’ teachings? Is it really so? If it is so, then it is like I have hit the jackpot! Because all the essential teachings from all the Buddhas in the ten directions and three lifetimes are included in Lamrim. If I can comprehend this Treatise, wouldn’t I understand the essences of teachings from all Buddhas in the ten directions and three lifetimes? Hence, what a great revelation! [06:10]
