National Day Celebrations: Five Precepts, Refuge Taking, Mahayana Refuge Taking Ceremony
The Five Precepts, Refuge Taking, and Mahayana Refuge Ceremony concluded successfully over the National Day weekend, welcoming close to 3,000 participants across five ceremony sessions.
Held annually as part of BW Monastery's Double Auspicious Celebration, this year's ceremonies commemorated two significant milestones—Singapore's 61st National Day and the 24th anniversary of BW Monastery's establishment. Against this meaningful backdrop, thousands of participants gathered to embark on or reaffirm their spiritual journey, making the occasion even more memorable.
The Refuge Taking, Mahayana Refuge, and Five Precepts ceremonies are among the most significant milestones in a Buddhist practitioner's journey. They provide participants with the precious opportunity to formally place their trust in the Triple Gem—the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—and to establish a firm foundation for their spiritual practice. By taking refuge and upholding the Five Precepts, participants embark on a path of wisdom, compassion, and ethical living, strengthening their commitment to the Dharma and cultivating the causes for lasting peace and happiness.
With great compassion, Senior Venerable Jing Yuan bestowed this precious opportunity upon all participants and delivered an inspiring Dharma discourse on the profound meaning and benefits of taking refuge in the Triple Gem. He also emphasized the importance of receiving and upholding the Five Precepts, explaining how they serve not merely as ethical guidelines, but as a lifelong commitment to protecting oneself and others, purifying one's conduct, and nurturing the conditions for spiritual growth.
The ceremonies were conducted with solemnity and joy, allowing thousands of participants to deepen their faith and strengthen their connection with the Triple Gem. Through the collective efforts of the Sangha, volunteers, and organizing team, the event provided a meaningful and memorable experience for all who attended, planting wholesome seeds that will continue to support their practice for years to come.
