It is the joy of finding out life’s answers at the Auspicious Puja that motivates a group of people to wake up so early every Sunday morning. Besides those who specially came from different parts of Singapore, we also have young parents who join in the session while waiting for their children to be dismissed from the children’s Buddhism class in the monastery. All of us have indeed formed a strong connection of joy and inspiration through singing Insightful Praises and listening to the discourses by the venerables every Sunday.

Topic Of The Day - Generosity As A Spiritual Practice - Should I give money to beggars?

This is an age-old discussion and we are often doubtful of whether to give or not to give. A question from a different angle was thrown from the floor, “Should we help or ignore if a well-dressed stranger asked to help out with some money?”

There was another interesting sharing where a lady shared that she had fostered a child from overseas for a year out of charity, and now when she is facing financial woes, she wondered if this has any connection to her charitable act.

From The Buddhist Perspective

Karma is not fate, but is the cause and effect of one’s actions. Virtuous actions will bring happiness while non-virtuous actions bring suffering. The karmic effect of the karma created by a person cannot be experienced by another person. In other words, karma teaches us to be responsible for our own actions and to take control of our lives by taking the correct actions to achieve the karmic results we want.

What’s The Right View?

Therefore, with reference to the sharing from the lady with the fostering experience, the difficulties she is facing after fostering the child is not due to the karma of the child, nor is it due to the karma of fostering. By fostering the child with compassion, she is doing a very virtuous act with good intentions. If she can persist in doing virtuous actions, after the difficulties are over, her future will only get better and better.
