【The Meditation Session – what to do in between sessions 】- restraining the sensory faculties - with which you restrain the sensory faculties - restrain them with a constant maintenance of your mindfulness

For the second one, it is explained as follows.

【2) Practicing restraint with the six sensory faculties is actually stopping the sensory faculties. For instance, you do not let them engage those sensory objects that will produce afflictions when, for instance, looked at. 】

Now when we restrain, how do we restrain? It is because with certain objects [or situations], for example, if you were to see it or hear it, this can produce an attachment or hostility in you. Once you realize this, you stop the object beforehand and not let your sensory faculties come upon it, do not let your sensory faculties indulge in it. What does this really say? What does this say? For example, this is why we do not have vacations in our Buddhist institute, because we know very well what we would do if we go outside. I am sorry to say that even if we do not want to be distracted, we will be. So now that we know, what is the reason we come to this place? We are trying to restrain it. That is why we can do this. If we are in the institute and I know that I like the TV next door, then I do not go there! Then, if there is something that would spur my attachment when I eat it, I try my best to eat less of it! What the eye doesn’t see, the mind doesn’t become tainted over.

修持轨理 - 未修中间 : 密护根门-如何防护-守护境者

第二个,就是解释下面。

【即以六根而防护者,若于何境,由瞻视等,能起烦恼,即于此境,不纵诸根而正止息。】

现在我们防护的时候,怎么防呢?就是说因为对这个境界,譬如说:你看见了或者你听见了,能够引发你的贪瞋的,你晓得了以后,这个境界就挡住它,不要放纵自己的根,不要放纵自己的根。这个话怎么讲,这个话怎么讲?譬如说:我们现在为什么在这个学院里边说平常不放假,因为我们很清楚,我们平常一跑出去的话,对不起,你不散乱也散乱。那么我们晓得了,现在我们到这里来的目的是在什么?在防止它,所以我们能够这样。如果说我们在学院里的时候,说那个隔壁房间那个电视机,我看了电视机欢喜,那我不要去! 然后呢,吃了这个东西会引发我的贪心,我尽量地少吃! 眼不见为净。
