For instance, we would frequently say, "Ah-ya, do not be attached!" But once you are on the dining table, even if you want to stop your attachment, you cannot. I think we all have this kind of experience. Why? Why? By this time, the subjective aspect [mental action] has grown to be very strong. It has already become very strong. This is why in general, people would say when you want to patch up a hole, do it when it is still small. If you wait until the hole is big, you will not be able to do anything about it. It is the same with the subjective aspects of our minds. When it is still very weak, we could not feel it. But by the time we get to the dining table, it is already very coarse and strong.

Now that I think about this, I realized there was a classic example. The doctor asked him, "What do you like to eat?" He thought about it for a while and his mind was stimulated. When the question entered the consciousness of the ear and entered the consciousness of the mind, the stomach began to "gooloo, gooloo" move. He was really thinking of what he enjoys eating, but at that moment, he was still able to stop [his attachment]. But if you put that particular food in front of him, there may be times when he can still stop himself. However, if this occurred during meal time, then he will not be able to stop himself. This process actually takes place over a very long series of steps. Gradually, we will explain these things very clearly.

譬如说我们常常说:“唉呀,不要去贪啊!”但是你在饭桌上面,要想不贪挡不住的。我想我们大家都有这个经验。为什么?为什么?因为这个时候,这个行相已经非常猛利了,已经非常猛利了。所以平常人家说,这个漏洞要补小的,等到大漏洞来的时候,你一点办法都没有。我们心理行相也是这样,那个很小的时候,我还感觉不出来,等到现在我们跑到饭桌上那很粗猛了。

我现在回想起来,那个典型的例子就这样,他问他:“你欢喜吃什么啊?”他想了半天,脑筋一动,这句话一落到他那个耳识当中,落到那意识当中,那个就咕噜、咕噜地就动起来了。然后呢他的确想吃什么,可是那个时候还可以挡得住,假如你把那东西摆在那里,有的时候他还可以挡得住,假定说吃饭的时候摆在那里就挡不住了。这个地方经过很长一个步骤,慢慢地我们会把这些事情,都要说得很清楚的。
