【Relying on the Teacher】- Rely on your Master

Why is this nonpartisan view needed? For [we] need to study the teaching. Since study is required, if you are attached to your [pre-occupied perception], it won’t work for you. Most peoples’ attachments cause arguments. Now you are inspired to learn from others, yet you come here and insist on doing it your way, how will it work? Of course it will not work! Especially with the Mahayana precepts, the Hinayana precepts may be a little relaxed. In other words, when entering [the monastery] you were told: “give up your own assertions.” That is, remove your own way of thinking and desires, do away with them. Replace them with “respect” and “veneration.” “Veneration” means to abide, abide by what? The Master’s teachings which are your tenets, the master you rely on is often referred to as the “Preceptor.” So abide by the Master’s rules and methods, uphold it (in mind and body), this is then appropriate and correct.
