【The Meditation Session】
The first branch is obeisance “With a clear body, speech and mind”
What we should truly strive to learn is right here. If you can do obeisance to the Buddha with one clear thought, the merit produced is inconceivable and incredibly immense, incredibly immense! The sutra tells us, that if you do obeisance to a Buddha's stupa with one clear thought, then under the ground that your prostrate body covers, you can collect the soil from there all the way until the disk of gold that supports earth (vajra-tala-sthāna). You grind that collection of soil into grains of sand. By using each grain as a single unit, the total number of grains would mean the number of times you would reign as the universal monarch (cakra-varti-rājan). That is incredible! Now if you just casually shovel a small amount of soil from underneath your feet, it will be [a] huge [amount of grains of sand that you will get]! So the distance from your body to the disk of gold that support earth (vajra-tala-sthāna) would mean [an] incredible [amount]! You would grind that amount of soil into sand. Hence the merit accumulated from doing obeisance to the Buddha is immense. Therefore, do not take this word "clear" lightly.
