Explanation by Venerables Ju Hui and Xing Fu of Teacher’s teachings

Be an Ambassador of Peace, Have the Courage to Apologise

On 14 November 2015 at 7.15pm, Venerable Ju Hui and Venerable Xing Fu visited BW Monastery’s Geylang Centre and brought with them the teachings on the topic “Be an Ambassador of Peace, Have the Courage to Apologise”.   They encouraged everyone whenever we are in a conflict, to examine our own thoughts, settle any disputes peacefully and together work hard to maintain the progress and harmony for our organization, family and work place.

Venerable Ju Hui divided Teacher’s one hour and twenty minutes teachings into 4 sections.  After listening respectfully to each section, both Venerables summarised the content for us by succinctly pointing out the key points, helping us to digest our Teacher’s “seemingly simple yet profound” teachings.  This enabled us, who were ignorant, to recognise how when we faced conflicts, our wrong views would arise to augment our bad karma by erroneously protecting “our face”, which would not be able to help increase the merits that could benefit our future lives.  When we fail to apologise, we lose the opportunity topleasantly surprise the other party with our apologies, and in that way to cultivate compassion.

In her kind and gentle tone, Teacher asked everyone, “whose responsibility is it to maintain harmony?”  This stirred the listeners to deliberate further. Thereafter, she guided us methodically to always remember the purpose of our Master Jih-Chang’slast words“this group of people must not disperse”, and clearly recognise that the “cause” (i.e. “must not disperse”) is to enable us to listen, reflect and practise Master Tsong-kha-pa’spure and complete teachings. Hence, whenever we encounter obstacles, we should tame our mind and take responsibility to resolve the conflicts.  In addition to repentance, the party who has done wrong should also seek strength from the Buddha and approach the other person to apologise; thereby becoming an ambassador of peace!

Teacher’s wise and farsighted teachings helped to annihilate our wrong belief that “promoting harmony within the organisation is the responsibility of our Master’s successor” and convincingly changed our personal views to “I want to be an ambassador of peace, to have the courage to apologise in order to maintain harmony and progress for the organization”.  May we all strive to purify the habits of our past negative karma, follow Teacher’s teachings to guide us in our efforts to correct our actions and swiftly become an ambassador of peace with a beautiful mind!

While in Singapore, the Venerables would also be conducting teachings and showing care to students or full time staff.  We hope that everyone would grasp this good opportunity to learn and be close to our teachers.
