Hence you will have to learn an opposite state of being serene before the state of being disturbed can be revealed. And that's when you will come to realize the characteristic of compositional activities. This is a point that I want to make a special explanation here. On the contrary, once you have that kind of experience, it will be easy for you to feel, "Oh, afflictions are arising!" When this arises at any given moment in your mind, you will recognize it. Normally for us ordinary beings, when we first begin to think about what afflictions are, we think that afflictions only happen when one is angry. No, no. It is that at any state that you are in now, you are amidst afflictions. But this type of affliction is more subtle, or you may be in a state of ignorance. This is what we must understand. This is the general definition of it.
