【Mindfulness of Death】- Seeking great and deeper Dharma

When someone asked Ga-ma-pa about changing the object of practice and meditation, he said to use the same one again. When someone asked him what came next, he said, “There is nothing more.

Ga-ma-pa is an excellent teacher. When someone asked him what to meditate on and to practise, he replied mindfulness of death (impermanence)! Then when asked to change the subject (mindfulness of death/impermanence) to meditate on or to delve into the topic of mindfulness of death/impermanence more deeply, what was his reply? Apply the traditional method, which is to meditate on mindfulness of death/impermanence, and to meditate on this repeatedly.  When the person who made the request says: “I already understood this topic of mindfulness of death/impermanence! Now I wish to learn something else”, Ga-ma-pa would repeat the same answer over and over. Then, what did he say in the end? It is this statement: “You say you want to understand deeper Dharma, sorry, it will not be of use to you at all, it is too premature for you!” Therefore, we need to understand the complete teachings of Dharma, the complete teachings of Dharma. In order to understand the complete teachings of Dharma, it needs to be done progressively. Just like what we have talked previously about learning dharma in sequential step-by-step order and which we have emphasized this point very clearly. As for the actual cultivation, it must be step by step. Do not seek great teachings or delve deeper into great teachings before that, as one must first build on the foundation step by step in order to progress.

念死无常 : 希求高深大法?

于迦玛巴请求另易所缘境时,重述前法。请其后者,则云后者全未能至。

那么这是个大善知识,有的人就请求他,说:现在要修什么呢?说修无常!那么现在呢就请求他,说:另外换一个,或者是更深一点的。结果他老人家怎么?把这个老办法,就是念死的办法,重说一遍,这样。欸,结果请的人本来是说:“已经晓得啦!现在再希望其他的。”他又说一遍,又说一遍。那么,最后他怎么说呀?“你说要了解的深深大法,对不起!这个对你一点用场都没有啊,你现在还早得很啊!”这一句话。所以我们现在必须要了解这个全貌,佛法的整个的全貌,的的确确我们了解,上一次讲的那个次第,已经说得很清楚。至于说真正修行,千千万万不要躐等,不要找大法、深法,一定要从这个基础上面一步一步地上升。
