我们如果说对一个尸罗，乃至于最起码的一个小小的戒，而不能好好地守，反而说「我是大乘」，这种人的话，啊，那是极应呵斥！不但是呵斥，应该，应该「极应呵斥」！我们现在有很多人就犯了这个毛病，说：「啊，这个大乘，这个小的地方不计较啊！」错了！反过来说，大乘尚且不可以说小的，小乘难道就可以说大了的吗？这是我们要了解哦！所以不管任何情况之下，我们要了解这个事实。我们总是要怀着惭愧努力深学啊！努力深学。自己做到，这个才对，不要随随便便了解了一点名相、文辞，就以为对了！这是一个很大的错误。乃至于了解了一点点文辞、名相，作为藉口，那更是非常可怕！

Karma – To have in depth learning with a sense of regret

With only one ethical discipline, even with the least severe one, if one cannot guard it well, and he claims that “I am a practitioner of the Mahayana,” this type of person is very dishonorable ! Not only should he be reproached, he should be, should be very strongly reproached. (Translator note: The Engish Lamrim text says “very dishonorable.” The Chinese text is more like “should be very strongly reproached.”) There are many of us now who make this mistake — one would say, “Ah, for the Mahayana teaching, one need not be concerned with small things!” Wrong! Conversely, since practitioners in the Mahayana should not be criticizing those in the Hinayana, should practitioners of the Hinayana be criticizing those in the Mahayana?” This is what we should understand! Therefore, no matter under what circumstances, we need to understand this fact. We should also embrace an attitude of regret and strive to learn in depth!

We should strive to learn in depth. Only when we are able to practice [the teachings] ourselves, are we on the right track. Don’t be thinking that you’re right by just understanding some names and terms superficially! This is a grave mistake. And, if with just an understand of some names and terms, we use them as excuses, that would be even more frightening!
