真正修行的话,主要的关键是全在这里头。如果你这个四点把握得住的话,绝对没有不成功的。不要说念佛是绝对成功,参禅也绝对成功,这样啊!现在我们不妨把那个内容,一个一个看一看。
【初中有五。】
第一个就是密护根门,
【一以何防护者,】
这是第一个。旁边注一个小字。
【谓遍护正念及于正念起常委行。】
那么,这个小字是这一次印的时候,旁边加进去的,有很多地方这个对我们很有帮助,说明。说我们在保护这个根门——六根门头,拿什么东西去防护呢?说「遍护正念,及于正念起常委行」。

【The Meditation Session】
【What to do in between meditation sessions】【Restraining the sensory faculties – with which you restrain the sensory faculties.】
When you truly meditate, the crucial points are all here. If you can get a good grasp on these four points [(a) restraining the sensory faculties, (b) acting vigilantly, (c) appropriate diet, and (d) striving to practice without sleeping at the wrong time, and acting properly at the time of sleep], there is no way that you will not succeed. Not just succeeding in recitation of Buddha's names, but you would also be successful in Zen, it is like that! Now, let us then go through the contents one by one.
【There are five parts to this section,】
The first one is to restrain the sensory faculties.
【the first of which is that with which you restrain the sensory faculties.】
This is the first one. There is a small letter next to it. (Note: This is done in the Chinese text)
【You restrain them with a constant maintenance of your mindfulness and a continuous persistence at mindfulness.】
Well, the small letter was added on the side in this edition of print, it is very useful to us in many areas, [it] explains the text. So it says that we are restraining the faculties -- the six sensory faculties. What do we use to restrain it? It says “you restrain them with a constant maintenance of your mindfulness and a continuous persistence at mindfulness”.
